Organic Viticulture
A commitment to the environment
At Can Descregut we are committed to organic viticulture as a deep promise to the land and the future We work with organic certification, regenerative farming practices, and traditional local varieties adapted to the Mediterranean climate. All of this to care for the soil, balance the vineyard, and reduce environmental impact.
Certified Organic Agriculture
Since 2009, we have farmed without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Our organic certification guarantees an environmentally respectful process, where soil health and biodiversity are essential to crafting wines that responsibly express the landscape.
The Catalan Council for Organic Agricultural Production (CCPAE) audits and certifies that our entire process — both in the vineyard and the winery — complies with European organic wine standards
Solar Energy
Aware of the importance of organic viticulture, we use solar energy in our production process. Harnessing the abundant sunlight of the Penedès enables us to reduce our carbon footprint and improve efficiency in using natural resources — strengthening our commitment to environmental respect.
Dry‑Farming
In the Mediterranean basin, vineyards have traditionally been dry‑farmed, perfectly suited to the region’s conditions. Despite recent droughts, maintaining this practice is a challenge that helps us preserve grape quality and support a more resilient viticulture. Without artificial irrigation, vines develop deep roots, enabling them to adapt better to the local climate and use natural resources more efficiently.
Cover Crops
In winter we allow a layer of spontaneous vegetation to grow between the rows. This cover protects the soil from erosion and improves its structure, fostering biodiversity and biological activity underground. The result is a more balanced, healthy ecosystem that keeps the soil alive and the vine growing in harmony. In spring, we till the vineyard, and this vegetation becomes a natural fertilizer.
Natural Cork
We choose natural cork for bottling — a fully biodegradable and recyclable material that ensures optimal wine preservation. Cork promotes aging through gentle micro‑oxygenation and provides a more respectful contact with the wine itself. This choice aligns with our philosophy of care and environmental responsibility.
Disgorgement Without Freezing
We disgorge our sparkling wines without freezing the neck of the bottle. This allows us to save energy and avoid using glycol, a toxic refrigerant. By doing this, we make the process cleaner and more sustainable, reducing environmental impact and improving energy efficiency in line with our organic viticulture values.
Use of Compost and Organic Fertilizers
We favor composting and organic fertilizers to naturally enrich the soil. This practice improves soil fertility and increases its ability to capture nitrogen and other essential nutrients. It also helps mitigate the effects of climate change and maintain a healthy, productive vineyard — always with respect for the environment. We do not use mineral fertilizers
Biological Pest Control
Our pest management is completely natural. Through biological control and the use of pheromones for sexual confusion, we prevent harmful insects from reproducing. This organic viticulture approach eliminates the need for pesticides and insecticides, guaranteeing a clean process that respects the entire ecosystem.
Selection of Traditional Varieties
We work with traditional Penedès grape varieties that are best adapted to our climate and naturally more resistant to disease. This choice helps reduce the need for plant protection treatments and keeps the vineyard healthy, balanced, and environmentally respectful, capable of producing high‑quality grapes.
